Andalusian Hound

The Podenco Andaluz is a Spanish rabbit hound found in three sizes and three coats — a primitive Iberian hunting dog from Andalusia.

History

It belongs to the wider family of Iberian podencos and has hunted rabbit across southern Spain for centuries, working by sight, scent and hearing. The size and coat varieties are practical rather than cosmetic: different ground and different game call for different dogs.

Temperament

The breed is known for being alert, agile and independent, affectionate with its own household and reserved with strangers, with a strong and genuine prey drive.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and very secure fencing; podencos climb and jump remarkably well. Training works best short and interesting. Coat care is minimal in all three varieties.
