American Staffordshire Terrier

The American Staffordshire Terrier is a muscular American bull-and-terrier breed — powerful, confident and closely bonded to its people.

History

It was developed in the United States from the same English bull-and-terrier stock behind the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, bred somewhat larger and standardised as a distinct breed in the twentieth century. Its history runs through farm work, guarding and, in a darker chapter, the pit.

Temperament

The breed is known for being confident, good-natured and loyal, affectionate with its family and eager to please. Its strength and drive make early socialising and steady handling important.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise and early, consistent, reward-based training, and it thrives on having a job and close human company. The short coat is easy to keep.
