Aidi

The Aidi is a North African working dog — a Berber livestock guardian and protector of the Atlas Mountains, alert and hardy rather than large.

History

It was kept by the Berber peoples of Morocco and the wider Atlas region to guard flocks, camps and homes, and to sound the alarm and stand its ground against predators and intruders. It was a protector by vigilance, sometimes paired with a sighthound that did the chasing.

Temperament

The breed is known for being alert, energetic and devoted, protective of its family and wary of strangers. It is a working dog through and through, watchful and quick to react.

Care and training

It needs plenty of exercise and a real job or occupation, along with early socialising and firm, consistent handling. The thick coat needs regular brushing and suits an outdoor, active life.
