Abyssinian

The Abyssinian is a slender, short-haired cat known for its warm ticked coat, in which each hair is banded with several colours — a look often compared to a wild rabbit's.

History

Despite a name and a founding legend that point to the Nile, the breed as we know it was developed and standardised in Britain, and its deeper origins likely lie around the Indian Ocean coast. The ticked "agouti" coat is its defining feature.

Temperament

The breed is known for being active, curious and endlessly busy — a cat that investigates everything and stays kitten-like in energy for years. It is people-oriented and dislikes being ignored.

Care

The short coat is easy to keep with occasional brushing; the real requirement is stimulation, because a bored Abyssinian invents its own games. Climbing space and company both go a long way.

Health

Known tendencies include an inherited form of anaemia and progressive retinal atrophy, for which responsible breeders test. These are patterns for the breed rather than a verdict on one cat; the measured facts and trait ratings are in the panels.
