Abruzzo-Maremma Sheepdog

The Maremma-Abruzzese Sheepdog is a large white Italian livestock guardian, bred to live among the flock and turn back wolves in the mountains of Abruzzo and the plains of the Maremma.

History

It is an ancient guardian type, kept by Italian shepherds for centuries to defend sheep on the open range through the long transhumance between summer pasture and winter lowland. The white coat let the shepherd tell it from a wolf at a distance.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, independent and deeply protective — affectionate and steady with its family and flock, and formidable toward a genuine threat. Bred to work without direction, it thinks for itself and is not a biddable pet.

Care and training

It needs space, moderate exercise and secure boundaries, along with early socialising and an owner who respects an independent guardian. The thick weatherproof coat sheds and needs regular brushing.

Health
