Turkish Van

The Turkish Van is a large, semi-longhaired cat from the Lake Van region of Turkey, famous for its chalk-white coat marked only on the head and tail — and for an unusual fondness for water.

History

It is a natural breed from eastern Turkey, where the distinctive "van" pattern — colour restricted to the head and tail on an otherwise white body — occurs on its own. Its water-resistant single coat and reputation as a "swimming cat" set it apart.

Temperament

The breed is known for being energetic, strong and playful — an active, athletic cat that bonds firmly with its people, though it is not always a lap-sitter. It stays lively and enjoys climbing and games.

Care

The single coat has little undercoat and needs only occasional grooming, mats little and sheds seasonally. An energetic cat, it wants play, height and space.

Health

The breed is generally healthy; considerations include a heart condition in some lines and the deafness linked to white coats and blue eyes. These are patterns for the breed rather than a verdict on one cat; the measured facts and trait ratings are in the panels.
