Pyrenean Mastiff

The Pyrenean Mastiff is a Spanish livestock guardian from the Aragonese Pyrenees — enormous, heavy-coated and, by the standards of guarding breeds, notably calm.

History

It guarded transhumant flocks in the Pyrenees against wolf and bear, walking the drove roads and traditionally wearing a spiked iron collar for the work. The breed collapsed when the wolf did and was rebuilt from the 1970s from a small number of surviving dogs.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, confident and unusually tolerant for a flock guardian — deliberate rather than reactive, gentle with its own household and children, and unhurried about strangers.

Care and training

Exercise needs are moderate; space and secure boundaries matter more. Socialising should start early, and a dog of this size must learn manners before it has the weight to ignore them. The thick coat sheds heavily and it drools.

Health

Known tendencies include hip and elbow dysplasia and bloat, and giant breeds live shorter lives on average. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
