Poitevin Hound

The Poitevin is an elegant French pack hound from the Poitou — a tall, fast scent hound bred for long chases over open country.

History

It was developed in western France to hunt in large packs, originally against wolves and later hare and deer, prized for pace, stamina and a musical voice. It nearly disappeared more than once and owes its survival to careful reconstruction.

Temperament

The breed is known for being sociable, gentle and even-tempered, at ease with people and other dogs — a true pack hound. On a trail it is fast, driven and relentless.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and space to run, along with a securely fenced area, since a hound in full cry does not recall. The short coat is easy, and the ears need regular cleaning.
