Maine Coon

The Maine Coon is a large, long-haired cat — the "gentle giant" — one of the oldest natural breeds in North America and the official state cat of Maine.

History

It developed as a landrace in the northeastern United States, well adapted to a harsh climate, and was later pedigreed in every major registry. Its size and long, weather-resistant coat are the features it is best known for.

Temperament

The breed is known for being friendly, sociable and easygoing, often following its people from room to room. It tends to be gentle with children and other animals, which is where the "gentle giant" name comes from.

Care

The long coat needs regular brushing to stay free of mats, and its size means a big cat that eats and plays accordingly. It stays kitten-like in temperament for years.

Health

Known tendencies include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and hip dysplasia, both more common in large breeds. These are patterns for the breed rather than a verdict on one cat; the measured facts and trait ratings are in the panels.
