Giant Schnauzer

The Giant Schnauzer is the largest of the three schnauzer breeds — a powerful, intelligent German working dog with a wiry coat, beard and bold presence.

History

It was developed in southern Germany from the standard schnauzer and larger farm and drover dogs to move cattle and guard property, and later took readily to police, military and guarding work. Its size and drive were bred for a job.

Temperament

The breed is known for being confident, loyal and high-energy, deeply bonded to its family and naturally protective. That drive and strength make it a dog for an experienced, active owner rather than a first-timer.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and mental work and firm, consistent, reward-based training that gives it a job to do. The wiry coat needs regular clipping or hand-stripping and beard cleaning.

Health
