English Mastiff

The English Mastiff is a British giant — one of the heaviest breeds in the world — a massive, dignified guardian of ancient molosser stock.

History

It descends from the great war and guarding dogs of antiquity, kept in Britain for centuries to watch estates and, in a crueller past, for baiting. Refined into a calmer companion, it remains first and foremost a guardian by presence rather than aggression.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, dignified and devoted — a gentle giant that is patient with its family and naturally protective without being excitable. Its sheer size makes early, gentle training a necessity rather than a choice.

Care and training

It needs only moderate exercise, with care not to over-work a heavy youngster whose joints are still forming, and firm but gentle handling suited to a huge dog. The short coat is easy, though the breed drools.

Health

Great size brings real costs: hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat and heart conditions are known tendencies, and like the giants it lives a short life on average. These are patterns for the breed rather than a verdict on one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
