Chippiparai

The Chippiparai is a South Indian sighthound from Tamil Nadu — a lean coursing dog once kept by the rulers of Chippiparai near Madurai.

History

It was bred for hunting hare, deer and boar on the dry plains of southern Tamil Nadu and was a symbol of royal patronage in the region. Like the other Tamil breeds it was maintained by village keepers rather than by a registry, and numbers have fallen with the hunting culture that supported it.

Temperament

The breed is known for being reserved, loyal to one household and highly independent, tolerant of heat and unbothered by discomfort.

Care and training

It needs room to run and secure fencing; the prey drive is real. The very short coat needs nothing but offers no protection from cold.

Health
