Carpathian Shepherd Dog

The Carpathian Shepherd Dog is a large Romanian livestock guardian, bred to defend flocks against wolves and bears in the Carpathian Mountains.

History

It has guarded sheep across the Romanian highlands for centuries, working on its own judgement far from the shepherd through hard mountain winters. It is one of several Romanian guardian breeds shaped by that landscape.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, devoted and fiercely protective — gentle and steady with its family and flock, and decisive against a threat. Bred to work alone, it is independent and needs an experienced owner.

Care and training

It needs space, moderate exercise and secure boundaries, along with early socialising and firm, respectful handling. The thick double coat sheds and needs regular brushing.

Health
