Bulgarian Hound

The Bulgarian Hound — Barak — is a rough-coated Balkan scent hound worked on hare, fox and boar.

History

It has hunted in the Bulgarian uplands for a long time and belongs to the family of rough-coated Balkan hounds that runs across the peninsula. Bulgarian hunters bred it for work rather than for a standard, and formal documentation has come late; the harsh coat is functional, protecting it in thorn and cold.

Temperament

The breed is known for being hardy, persistent and independent, friendly with its own people and thoroughly single-minded on a scent.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and secure ground. The harsh coat needs brushing and little else.

Health
