Bouvier des Flandres

The Bouvier des Flandres is a large, rough-coated herding breed from the farmland of Flanders — a powerful cattle dog turned versatile worker.

History

It was bred by farmers of the region to drive cattle, pull carts and turn its hand to any farm task, and later served with distinction as a messenger and search dog in wartime. The tousled coat and full beard suited long days outdoors.

Temperament

The breed is known for being steady, intelligent and loyal — a calm, even-tempered dog that is protective of its family without being volatile. Its strength and working drive want an experienced, active owner.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise and mental work and takes readily to training, thriving on a job. The rough double coat needs regular grooming and clipping, with the beard kept clean.
