Bombay

The Bombay is a sleek, all-black cat with copper eyes, bred to look like a miniature panther in the living room.

History

It was created in the United States in the 1950s by crossing sable Burmese with black American Shorthairs, the goal a jet-black, close-lying coat and a rounded, muscular body. The name nods to the black leopards of India rather than to any real origin there.

Temperament

The breed is known for being affectionate, sociable and people-focused — a lap-seeking cat that often greets visitors and gets on with children and other pets. It carries much of the Burmese's outgoing character.

Care

The short, glossy coat is easy to keep and needs little more than an occasional wipe to keep its shine. This is a cat that wants attention and company, and does poorly ignored.

Health

Known tendencies, inherited from its Burmese ancestry, include a skull condition in some lines and a tendency to gain weight. These are patterns for the breed rather than a verdict on one cat; the measured facts and trait ratings are in the panels.
