American Curl

The American Curl is known for its ears, which curl gracefully backward from a natural mutation — a distinctive look that, unlike some ear traits, is not tied to health problems.

History

The breed traces to a single stray cat with curled ears taken in in California in 1981, from which the trait was bred on in both short and long-haired forms. Kittens are born with straight ears that curl in the first days of life.

Temperament

The breed is known for staying playful and kitten-like into adulthood — affectionate, curious and people-oriented, often described as a "Peter Pan" cat. It is sociable and enjoys being part of the household.

Care

The curled ears have firmer cartilage and should be handled gently and cleaned with care; the silky coat is otherwise easy to keep. It asks mainly for company and play.

Health

Importantly, the gene behind the curled ears is not linked to the skeletal problems some other ear mutations carry, and the breed is generally healthy. As with any cat, the measured facts and trait ratings are in the panels.
