Beagle

The Beagle is a British scent hound, a smaller cousin of the foxhound, bred to hunt rabbit and hare and now equally common as a family dog.

History

It was developed in Britain as a pack hound for hunting small game on foot, valued for stamina and an exceptional nose. That same nose has since put it to work as a detection dog in airports and quarantine.

Temperament

The breed is known for being friendly, curious and even-tempered, at ease with children and other dogs. It is also single-minded once it catches a scent, which is charm and challenge in one.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise and a securely fenced space, because a nose on a trail stops listening. Recall is the hard part of training a scent hound, and food rewards go a long way. The short coat is easy to keep.
