Alpine Dachsbracke

The Alpine Dachsbracke is a small, sturdy Austrian scent hound with short legs and a long body, bred to track wounded game through steep alpine forest.

History

It was developed in Austria to follow the blood trail of wounded deer and other game over difficult mountain terrain, its low build letting it work close to the ground and its stamina carrying it through long, cold pursuits. It was a favourite of Austrian royalty for mountain hunts.

Temperament

The breed is known for being friendly, fearless and determined — an even-tempered companion at home and a dogged, focused worker on a trail. It is sociable and hardy.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise and enjoys work for its nose, and a securely fenced space, since a scent hound on a trail stops listening. The dense coat is easy to keep.

Health
