Greek Harehound

The Greek Harehound — Hellinikos Ichnilatis — is Greece's only internationally recognised scent hound, worked on hare in mountain country.

History

It comes from the Peloponnese and the mountains of northern Greece, where it has hunted hare over broken limestone terrain for centuries. It was recognised internationally in 1959, and it remains almost entirely a Greek hunting dog rather than an exported breed.

Temperament

The breed is known for being lively, determined and independent, affectionate with its own people and reserved with strangers, with a resonant voice it uses freely on a trail.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and secure ground; it was bred to work far ahead of the hunter. The short black-and-tan coat is easy.

Health

Generally robust from working selection, with ear infections the usual complaint. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
