York Chocolate

The York Chocolate is a semi-long-haired brown cat from New York state, and one of the rarest breeds recorded here — a farm cat written into a standard.

History

It began in the 1980s on a farm in New York, where a chocolate-coloured kitten from ordinary domestic parents was bred on for the colour and coat. The breed never achieved wide recognition and remains scarce, which is a fact about its registry rather than about the cats.

Temperament

The breed is known for being affectionate and energetic, inclined to follow its people from room to room, and keeping a farm cat's appetite for hunting and outdoor interest.

Care

The semi-long coat is silkier than it looks and needs regular brushing rather than daily work. Its energy asks for play and climbing space; this is not a cat that settles for a cushion.
