Stephens Cur

The Stephens Cur is an American treeing cur from Kentucky, developed by one family over generations and usually black with white markings.

History

It was bred by the Stephens family in south-eastern Kentucky from mountain cur stock, selected for treeing squirrel and raccoon in steep country. It is registered by cur associations and remains a working dog rather than a show breed.

Temperament

The breed is known for being determined, courageous and closely bonded to its handler, friendly at home and entirely absorbed in work.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise and hunting work; it is a poor fit for a household with nothing to offer it. The short coat needs little.
