Segugio dell'Appennino

The Segugio dell'Appennino is an Italian scent hound of the Apennine mountains, recognised recently as distinct from the other Italian segugi.

History

It hunts hare and boar along the Apennine chain that runs the length of Italy, and was kept by mountain hunters as a working dog long before any standard described it. Italian recognition is recent and separates it from the Maremmano and the classic Segugio Italiano.

Temperament

The breed is known for being hardy, determined and sociable in a pack, calm at home and absorbed on a trail.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise over real terrain and secure ground. Coat care is minimal for either variety.
