Posavac Hound

The Posavac Hound is a Croatian scent hound from the Sava valley, worked on hare and fox in river country.

History

It takes its name from Posavina, the flood plain of the Sava, where it has hunted for centuries; wall paintings in a Croatian church from 1683 show hounds of the type. It was recognised as a distinct breed in 1955 and is bred almost exclusively by Croatian hunters.

Temperament

The breed is known for being gentle and even-tempered at home, sociable in company and relentless once it has a line, with a carrying voice.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and secure ground. The short wheaten coat is easy and the drop ears want checking.

Health

Generally robust, with ear infections the usual complaint. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
