Podengo Galego

The Podengo Galego is Galicia's rabbit hound — a prick-eared Iberian sighthound-scenthound worked in small packs over stone walls and scrub.

History

It belongs to the wider family of Iberian podengos and has hunted rabbit in north-west Spain for centuries, working by sight, scent and hearing together. Recognition is recent and regional; the type long predates it.

Temperament

The breed is known for being quick, alert and independent, sociable with its own pack and reserved with strangers, with a strong and genuine prey drive.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and secure fencing — it jumps and climbs well. Training works best short and interesting. The coat, smooth or wiry depending on the dog, needs little.
