Mudhol Hound

The Mudhol Hound is an Indian sighthound from northern Karnataka — the same type as the Caravan Hound, and used by the Indian Army as a service dog.

History

It descends from sighthounds brought along caravan routes into the Deccan, and takes its name from the princely state of Mudhol, whose ruler presented a pair to King George V. It is one of the few Indian breeds with formal recognition and breeding programmes, and the army's adoption of it has raised its profile considerably.

Temperament

The breed is known for being aloof with strangers, deeply loyal to one household and highly alert — a sighthound that also guards, which is unusual in the group.

Care and training

It needs room to run and secure fencing. Early socialising matters given the reserve. The short coat suits heat and needs almost nothing.

Health

Generally hardy for a sighthound, with the usual anaesthetic sensitivity of the build. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
