Laizhou Red Dog

The Laizhou Red is a large Chinese working dog from Shandong province — a modern breed built for guarding and police work.

History

It was developed in the Laizhou region in the twentieth century from local dogs crossed with imported working breeds, including German Shepherd and Great Dane stock, to produce a tall red-coated guard dog. It is recognised in China and little known elsewhere.

Temperament

The breed is known for being confident, obedient and strongly protective of its household, steadier than its size suggests and responsive to a handler it trusts.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise, consistent training and early socialising. The short coat is easy to keep.
