Komondor

The Komondor is the corded white guardian of the Hungarian plains — a livestock dog whose coat forms heavy felted cords that reach the ground.

History

It came into the Carpathian basin with the Cumans in the thirteenth century and has guarded sheep on the puszta ever since, working loose with the flock rather than under direction. The cords are functional: they blend the dog into the sheep and turn a wolf's teeth.

Temperament

The breed is known for being independent, deeply protective and calm until it is not — it was bred to assess a threat and act without waiting for a shepherd, and it still does.

Care and training

It needs space, secure boundaries and thorough socialising, and it is unsuited to a household without room. The cords must be separated by hand as they form and take a very long time to dry; the coat is a serious ongoing commitment rather than a look.

Health

Known tendencies include hip dysplasia, bloat and skin problems within the cords if they are not kept clean and dry. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
