East European Shepherd
The East European Shepherd is the Soviet Union's reworking of the German Shepherd, bred larger and for cold.
History
Soviet breeders developed it from the 1930s from imported German Shepherds crossed with local stock, for military, police and guarding work across a country where winters made the German dog struggle. It became the standard Soviet service dog and remains common across the former USSR, recognised in Russia but not internationally.
Temperament
The breed is known for being steady, confident and strongly protective, closely bonded to its handler and markedly less reactive than the working German Shepherd lines.
Care and training
It needs substantial exercise and real work, along with early socialising and consistent handling. The thick double coat sheds heavily and suits cold far better than heat.
Health
Known tendencies follow the German Shepherd: hip and elbow dysplasia, and in some lines degenerative myelopathy. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
