Cane di Oropa

The Cane di Oropa is a herding dog of the Biellese Alps in Piedmont, named for the Oropa valley.

History

It has worked cattle and sheep on the alpine pastures above Biella for centuries, moving stock between valley and high summer grazing. Italian cynologists documented it formally only in the twenty-first century, after finding the working population still intact with local herders — the same story as several other Italian regional shepherds.

Temperament

The breed is known for being attentive, hard-working and closely tied to its herder, watchful with strangers and steady with stock.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise and genuine work. The medium coat sheds seasonally and needs regular brushing.
