Tatranský Durič

The Tatranský durič is a Slovak scent hound of the Tatra mountains, bred to work large game on steep forested ground.

History

It was developed by Slovak hunters from local hound stock for tracking boar and deer in the High Tatras, where a hound has to work alone on difficult terrain rather than in a pack. It is a national breed with a small population and little presence outside Slovakia.

Temperament

The breed is known for being courageous, persistent and independent at work, attached to its handler and reserved with strangers.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and genuine work; recall competes with the nose and needs building early. The short coat is easy.
