Segugio Maremmano

The Segugio Maremmano is a hardy Italian scent hound from the Maremma marshland of Tuscany — the country's most common hunting dog, and a working type rather than a show one.

History

It developed in the Maremma for hunting wild boar over rough, thorny and often wet ground, and Italian hunters bred it for endurance and nose rather than for appearance. Formal recognition came only in the twenty-first century, long after the type was ubiquitous.

Temperament

The breed is known for being determined, adaptable and sociable in a pack, calm at home and utterly focused in the field.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and real work; this is a hunting dog kept by hunters. Both the smooth and rough coats need little care.
