Rat Terrier
The Rat Terrier is an American farm dog — a compact, energetic terrier bred to clear vermin and keep a working homestead in order.
History
It was a fixture of American farms in the early twentieth century, bred from a mix of terrier and other working stock to hunt rats and small game, and it earned its keep by the tail. It comes in a range of sizes and remains a versatile, no-nonsense worker.
Temperament
The breed is known for being alert, clever and lively, an affectionate companion with a strong prey drive and a terrier's independent streak. It bonds closely and stays busy.
Care and training
It needs regular exercise and mental work, secure fencing against its hunting instinct, and consistent, reward-based training. The short coat is easy to keep.
Health
The breed is generally healthy and hardy; noted tendencies include patellar luxation, hip problems and, in some dogs, allergies. These are patterns for the breed rather than a verdict on one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
