Rafeiro do Alentejo

The Rafeiro do Alentejo is a large Portuguese guardian from the plains of the Alentejo — a calm, aloof mastiff that watches flock and farm, especially by night.

History

It was kept to guard livestock on the long seasonal drives and to watch farms and estates across southern Portugal, working most alertly after dark. It is a guardian shaped by that heavy, independent responsibility.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, serious and deeply loyal — steady and undemonstrative with its family, and reserved and vigilant toward strangers. It is independent and territorial, a working guardian rather than a companion.

Care and training

It needs space, moderate exercise and secure boundaries, along with early socialising and firm, experienced handling. The dense coat sheds and needs regular brushing.

Health
