Kanni

The Kanni is a South Indian sighthound closely related to the Chippiparai — traditionally given as a gift to a bride's family, which is what its name refers to.

History

It comes from southern Tamil Nadu and was kept by rural families for coursing hare and small game. The name means "maiden", from the custom of presenting a pair at a wedding, and the breed was for a long time not sold at all, only given — which is part of why so few exist.

Temperament

The breed is known for being intensely loyal to its own household, wary of strangers and quiet, with the sighthound's calm at rest and drive in pursuit.

Care and training

It needs room to run and secure fencing. The short coat needs nothing. Early socialising helps with the natural reserve.
