French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is a small French companion breed — flat-faced, bat-eared and famously easygoing — and now one of the most registered dogs in countries from Australia to the United States.

History

It appeared in Paris in the mid-nineteenth century, apparently from crossing toy bulldogs brought over by English lacemakers with local Parisian ratters. It was a companion from the start rather than a working dog.

Temperament

The breed is known for being affectionate, playful and content indoors, happiest as a close companion. It tends to bond hard with its people and dislikes long spells alone.

Care and training

It needs only modest exercise and short walks, and the smooth coat is easy to keep. Heat is the real hazard: a flat-faced dog overheats quickly, so it should be kept cool and never over-exerted in warm weather.

Health

Selective breeding for the short face brings genuine breathing, spinal and eye concerns the standard cannot wish away, and many cannot whelp naturally. This page reports the measured shape; a breed's known risks are a matter for the individual dog and its vet.
