Chinese Chongqing Dog

The Chinese Chongqing Dog is an ancient Chinese guarding and hunting breed from the Chongqing region — a compact, short-coated dog with a wrinkled face and a bamboo-shaped tail.

History

Pottery figures from Han dynasty tombs show dogs of this outline, which puts the type in the region two thousand years ago. It survived in rural Sichuan and Chongqing as a farm guardian and hunter, and became rare during the twentieth century as urban dog-keeping was restricted.

Temperament

The breed is known for being confident, territorial and closely bonded to its own family, calm at home and unhesitating about strangers.

Care and training

It needs moderate exercise, secure boundaries and early socialising. The short coat is easy, but the facial wrinkles want cleaning and the shortened muzzle means heat deserves care.
