Campeiro Bulldog

The Campeiro Bulldog is a Brazilian working bulldog descended from the old English bulldogs brought to southern Brazil by settlers.

History

It worked cattle in the highlands of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul and in the region's slaughterhouses, holding animals rather than driving them. When those slaughterhouses were closed in the 1970s the breed nearly went with them, and it survives because a small number of Brazilian breeders gathered the remaining working dogs.

Temperament

The breed is known for being determined, territorial and strongly attached to its own family, with the tenacity the work required and none of the modern show bulldog's passivity.

Care and training

It needs moderate but real exercise, secure boundaries, early socialising and a consistent owner. The short coat is easy.

Health

It kept a functional muzzle and a working build, so it avoids much of the breathing and birthing trouble of the English Bulldog; joint concerns of heavy breeds still apply. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
