Braque du Puy

The Braque du Puy is a French pointing breed of disputed survival — a light, fast gun dog that most French authorities consider extinct.

History

It was reportedly created in the nineteenth century in Poitou by the du Puy brothers, from a French braque crossed with a sighthound, which would account for the breed's speed and its lean outline. Whether any true descendants remain is contested; French registries do not recognise it as a living breed.

Temperament

Contemporary accounts described a fast, wide-ranging pointing dog with a gentle disposition, but the record is historical rather than current.

Care and training

Any dog of this type would need the exercise of a hard-running gun dog and work for its nose. The short coat needs little.
