Armant Dog

The Armant — the Egyptian Sheepdog — is a shaggy herding and guarding dog from Egypt, named after the town of Armant near Luxor.

History

It is thought to descend from European herding dogs brought to Egypt in the nineteenth century, possibly with Napoleon's expedition, crossed with local dogs. It worked flocks and guarded property along the Nile, and remains rare outside Egypt.

Temperament

The breed is known for being alert, energetic and protective of its household, wary of strangers and attentive to stock.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise and a job. The shaggy coat needs regular brushing. Early socialising matters, given the guarding streak.
