Serbian Hound

The Serbian Hound is a Balkan scent hound in black and tan — a compact, hardy tracker used on hare, fox and boar across the mountains of the region.

History

Hounds of this type have worked the Balkans for centuries, described in nineteenth-century accounts and standardised in the twentieth as the Serbian Hound. It hunts alone or in small groups over difficult ground rather than in large formal packs.

Temperament

The breed is known for being lively, persistent and attached to its handler, tolerant of other dogs and vocal on a trail.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and secure ground. The short dense coat is easy to keep and the drop ears want checking. Recall is the usual scent-hound problem.
