Scottish Fold

The Scottish Fold is known for the folded ears that give it a rounded, owl-like face — the result of a dominant gene that also affects the cartilage and joints throughout the body.

History

The breed traces to a single farm cat named Susie, found in Scotland in 1961 with naturally folded ears, from which all Scottish Folds descend. Because the same gene that folds the ears causes skeletal problems, the breed is controversial and is not recognised or is banned by several registries.

Temperament

The breed is known for being sweet-natured, placid and affectionate — a quiet, companionable cat that bonds closely with its household. That gentle reputation is a large part of its popularity.

Care

Coat care depends on the variety and is straightforward, but the ears need regular checking. More important is honest awareness of the breed's welfare debate, since the trait that defines its look is tied to its health.

Health

The folding gene causes osteochondrodysplasia, a degenerative joint and cartilage disorder that can cause pain and stiffness; this is inherent to the breed, not an occasional risk. It is the central welfare concern behind the breed and a matter for careful, informed decisions.
