Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer is a German ratting breed — a small, sturdy dog with a wiry coat, bushy eyebrows and a distinctive beard.

History

It was bred down from the Standard Schnauzer with smaller breeds in nineteenth-century Germany, to make a compact farm dog that could kill rats and vermin around the barn. Unlike most small ratters it is not classed as a terrier.

Temperament

The breed is known for being alert, friendly and spirited, an affectionate companion that is also quick to sound the alarm. It is clever and people-oriented, and enjoys being in the middle of the household.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise and takes readily to training. The wiry coat does not shed much but needs regular clipping or hand-stripping and beard cleaning to stay tidy.

Health
