German Pinscher

The German Pinscher is a medium, sleek-coated German breed — an old ratter and guardian that stands behind both the Dobermann and the Miniature Pinscher.

History

It is one of Germany's older breeds, kept to kill vermin and watch the homestead, and it contributed to the development of several better-known pinscher and schnauzer types. Its smooth coat and athletic build are the marks of a working dog.

Temperament

The breed is known for being confident, lively and strong-willed — an intelligent, energetic dog with a sharp watchdog instinct and a clear mind of its own. It bonds closely but is no pushover.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise and mental work, along with firm, consistent, reward-based training and early socialising to steer a determined dog. The short coat is easy to keep.

Health

The breed is generally healthy; noted tendencies include hip dysplasia, inherited eye conditions, a bleeding disorder and heart conditions in some lines. These are patterns for the breed rather than a verdict on one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
