Egyptian Mau

The Egyptian Mau is a naturally spotted short-haired cat — one of the few domestic breeds whose spots occur on their own rather than by design — and among the fastest of domestic cats.

History

Its spotted look recalls the cats of ancient Egyptian art, but the modern breed was established in the mid-twentieth century from cats brought to the United States. The spotting, banded legs and "mascara" lines are its signatures.

Temperament

The breed is known for being active, loyal and closely bonded to its own people, while often shy of strangers and sensitive to change. It is athletic and playful, and values a settled, predictable home.

Care

The short coat is easy to keep, and the cat mostly asks for play, height and company. It tends to attach to its family and prefers routine to upheaval.

Health
