Central Asian Shepherd Dog

The Central Asian Shepherd Dog — Alabai in much of its range — is an ancient livestock guardian from the steppe and desert of Central Asia.

History

It is a landrace rather than a constructed breed, shaped over millennia across Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and neighbouring regions by the work of guarding flocks against wolves. Formal standards are recent and describe a population that had already existed for thousands of years.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, confident and decisive, unbothered by most things and immovable about the ones that matter to it. Like other flock guardians it works independently and does not look to a handler for permission.

Care and training

It needs space and secure boundaries, early socialising, and an owner who understands guarding breeds; it is restricted in some countries. Exercise needs are moderate rather than extreme — this is a dog built for endurance and patience, not for constant activity.

Health
