Black Norwegian Elkhound
The Black Norwegian Elkhound is a spitz-type hunting dog from Norway — a smaller, all-black counterpart to the grey Norwegian Elkhound, bred to hunt moose and other big game.
History
It was developed in Norway as a lighter, more agile version of the elkhound, black-coated and quick, used to track and hold large game and to work in the cold northern forests. It remains uncommon outside Scandinavia.
Temperament
The breed is known for being bold, energetic and alert, devoted to its family and a keen, vocal watchdog. It is intelligent and independent, with a strong hunting drive.
Care and training
It needs a great deal of exercise and mental work, and secure fencing against a strong urge to hunt and roam. The dense double coat sheds heavily, especially seasonally, and needs regular brushing.
Health
The breed is generally hardy; noted tendencies include hip dysplasia and inherited eye conditions. These are patterns for the breed rather than a verdict on one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
