Polish Hunting Dog

The Polish Hunting Dog — the Gończy Polski — is a black-and-tan Polish scent hound bred to work boar and deer in forest and mountain.

History

It descends from old Polish hounds kept by the nobility, and was standardised in the twentieth century from surviving working stock in the Carpathian foothills. It hunts alone or in small groups rather than in large packs.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, gentle at home and thoroughly persistent in the field, with the melodious voice its hunters value.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise across real ground and secure containment. The short coat is easy. Recall is the standing difficulty of a hound bred to work out of sight.

Health
