Lobito Herreño

The Lobito Herreño is a small herding dog from El Hierro in the Canary Islands, named for a wolf-like appearance rather than any wolf ancestry.

History

It worked goats and cattle on the smallest of the Canary Islands, where the terrain is steep and volcanic, and was recognised regionally only in recent decades. The population has always been small and confined largely to the island.

Temperament

The breed is known for being quick, attentive and closely bonded to its handler, wary of strangers and highly responsive to stock.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise and work; a herding dog without stock needs a substitute. The medium coat needs occasional brushing.
