Javanese

The Javanese is a long-haired pointed cat of the oriental type, and its name has nothing to do with Java — it was chosen to sit alongside the Balinese, which is equally unrelated to Bali.

History

It was developed in North America as a long-haired counterpart to the Colorpoint Shorthair, extending the Balinese into point colours outside the traditional four. As with its shorthaired equivalent, whether it is a breed or a division of another is answered differently by different registries.

Temperament

The breed is known for being vocal, affectionate and persistently involved — a talkative cat that follows its household about, learns quickly, and dislikes solitude.

Care

The single-layered silky coat has no woolly undercoat, so it mats far less than its length suggests and regular brushing is enough. Company is the greater commitment.

Health

It carries the Siamese and oriental pattern of known tendencies, including dental issues and conditions associated with the slender build. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one cat; the measured facts and trait ratings are in the panels.
